1) Download stable release (2008-02-06) of kernel drivers

user@hostname:~$ wget 
ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.16.tar.bz2

2) sudo mkdir /usr/src/alsa

3) cd /usr/src/alsa

4) tar -xvvf alsa-driver-1.0.16.tar.bz2

5) cd alsa-driver-1.0.16

6) sudo ./configure --with-cards=via82xx --with-sequencer=yes

7) sudo make

8) sudo make install

9 # modprobe snd-via82xx

10 # modprobe snd-pcm-oss

11 # modprobe snd-mixer-oss

12 # modprobe snd-seq-oss

now reboot.

13) cd /usr/src/alsa

14) sudo wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/lib/alsa-lib-1.0.16.tar.bz2

15) sudo wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils/alsa-utils-1.0.16.tar.bz2

16) sudo tar -xvvf alsa-lib-1.0.16.tar.bz2

17) cd alsa-lib-1.0.16

18) sudo ./configure

19) sudo make install

20) cd ../

21) sudo tar -xvvf alsa-utils-1.0.16.tar.bz2

22) cd alsa-utils-1.0.16

23) sudo ./configure

configure: error: this packages requires a curses library

24) sudo make install

make: *** No rule to make target `install'.  Stop.

25) sudo aptitude install ncurses-dev

26) sudo ./configure

27) sudo make install

28) cd ../alsa-driver-1.0.16

29) sudo ./configure  --with-kernel=/usr/sc/linux-headers-2.6.24-18-386 --with-cards=via82xx --with-sequencer=yes

configure: error: invalid variable name: --with-cards

bah do this:

30) sudo ./configure --with-cards=via82xx --with-kernel=/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-18-386 --with-sequencer=yes

31) sudo make

32) sudo make install

33) sudo modprobe snd-via82xx
