THE SCHOOL I'D LIKE by Lasse Havelund I’ve given the headline for this essay a thought, and I’ve decided on a few things I’d like from school. CHALLENGES I find that challenges are what keep me interested in things. If an assignment I’m given doesn’t challenge me, I get bored easily, which completely removes any motivation I might’ve had prior to attempting to solve it. Therefore, any task or assignment would need to challenge me, and the challenge should be fun. OPEN-MINDEDNESS A lot of teachers seem to be too narrow-minded and conservative when it comes to teaching. If you just give the individual pupil more choice—e.g. how he wants to do something (in hand or on a computer, for instance), the procedure of how he wants to solve a problem, or whom he wants to co-operate with (for tasks done in groups—it’s not beneficial to anyone unless you want to work with the people you’re commissioned to work with). Also in choice of subjects—it’s no use to talk to a class about what various technical terms in football (halftime, free-kick etc.) mean, if you have a class where no one could care less about why Ashely Cole was given a red card in the match against Bulgaria.
