The full moon was the only light that had covered the hills and forest where they were running. Roy's squad was battered and bruised, the torture they escaped being the reason that compelled them toward freedom. Gun fire blistered the woods around them, bullets whizzing by mere inches from their bodies. Everyone had escaped, but not perfectly. The squad continued to an opening, and with a short flick of his wrist, he motioned them to get into hiding positions. with a flash, they run to different positions, giving the "whistle, knock" signal when ready. And just as the last one dives into the shadows, the enemy force rushes into the clearing. they slow their rush and split into two groups, one walking toward Roy, the other toward his squad. His breathing is heavy, and the pain is astounding, but he tries his hardest to keep his breath quiet. the men close in on him, when he begins to hear them. Aircraft; but not just any aircraft, friendlies. He must have some kind of luck, as this may be the only chance he has to keep his squad alive and not have them disappointed a second time. Roy slowly pulls a flare from his belt, the only thing he could grab in the frenzied escape from the POW camp. Remembering that bombers fire upon flares for night attacks, he readies the flare for lighting, waits till the soldiers pass, then lights and throws the flare straight into the clearing as high as he can. "FLASH AND SCATTER!", Roy shouts. Him and the squad are up to their feet and running in record time, each in random direction away from the clearing. they knew what was coming, and they needed to clear the area. The enemies are immediately caught on a blinding flash of red, the perfect paint color for "DROP ORDINANCE HERE" that the airforce understood. Roy after gaining headway, continues to the preplanned rendezvous point, hoping the best for his squad. the screams of jet engines fly overhead, much faster then he thought, and Roy prepares for the ensuing explosion. he must have thought he had gone further then he thought, cause the blast took him off his feet. His ears ringing, his head drowsy, the fall took more out of him then he thought. his attempts to stand on his feet prove worthless, and his energy draining fast. the smell of fire and smoke fill his nose, giving him the reassurance that he was not being followed. the full moon grew dim as Roy lied sprawled on the grass. His eyes close, and he begins to fall asleep. He couldn't continue, his only hope, the newly formed squad....
