* Topic for #osuosl is: OSUOSL :: http://osuosl.org :: Please email us at support@osuosl.org for hosting support * Topic for #osuosl set by cshields at Sun Oct 1 18:19:37 2006 Whoa, big pile of ops. hooolllla * poningru waves at justdave too for good measure ops == people who work a the OSL Wow, that's some solid presence. or alum, i gues ha * skyfaller (n=skyfalle@wikipedia/Skyfaller) has joined #osuosl skyfaller, psst, ask them! (-: paulproteus: I think you better ask dude skyfaller may have joined rejon for lunch ;) * marineam is confused So skyfaller, poningru, and skyfaller are with freeculture.org. We're an international student group to promote Free Software and Free Culture ideals. Alas, our current web host is in a huge mess and has broken our website for past four days. We primarily operate by independent chapters at schools; that keeps top-level administrivia low and local activism high. http://uf.freeculture.org/ is one example of a thriving chapter. yeah, I need to respond to your email unfortunately, it doesn't sound like we are the best place for you.. especially in terms of the DMCA ordeal Basically, we wanted to know if, if we applied for hosting from you guys and we got sent a take-down notice by some alleged (C) holder, if you would immediately shut our service or instead talk to us first. being that this is a university, we deal almost daily with DMCA CnD's and have to respond to them quickly.. sounds similar to what you guys just ran into By "we" I actually mean skyfaller. Don't tell him, but this isn't as important to me as it is to him. (-; err tack me on to that it would be important imho Sounds like you guys need something out at Sealand I don't think we do things so far outside the mainstream often enough that this will be a problem, and if we do it so much that it is a problem nowhere in the US would host us anyway, which is why I'm not so interested in it. there is also the open source aspect.. We typically reserve our resources for open source code development and collaboration. Right, that's a good point, what with the name and all. (-: and you guys have to admit, requesting hosting on the grounds of trying to find a place that will help safeguard you against DMCA issues is not a good introduction.. I think if freeculture.org were up you'd see we are strongly about building, using, and promoting FLOSS, and I think that a movement toward broader use of open source and Free software has a lot in common with the quest for reusability of other cultural items. sure. I think it's a great idea.. cshields, Yeah, I see what you mean about the approach. (-: but if I see it as a liability, I don't want to jeopardize the likes of Mozilla, OpenOffice.org, Linux kernel.org, and dozens of other projects if things turn into a legal hassle.. Of course! have you looked into Sealand? First of all we understand it's very expensive, and secondly I think there was a fire that made the place less useful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealand#Sealand_fire for the fire, fwiw. * rejon (n=rejon@64-121-195-22.c3-0.sfpo-ubr4.sfrn-sfpo.ca.cable.rcn.com) has joined #osuosl hello all thx first hosting inkscape on your infrastructure I'm working with the freeculture.org project and am hoping that you all would agree to provide hosting for them on osuosl infra... I can provide more details if questions the current site is at: http://freeculture.org the current site is offline because of bad hosting rejon: I need more information on 1) what this contributes to the Open Source Community, and 2) how this is not a liability to the rest of the hosting we do here, because the initial message definitely makes it seem that way. And we would have a similar reaction to a DMCA request as you guys had previously :( right now we are at our financial limits, so justifying yet another project without additional funding would mean a very exceptional answer to #1, and no liability with #2.. but with that, I am out most of the day trying to raise more funds for the lab, so it might be best to work through the email already received
