One idea I wanted to run by y'all - what do y'all think of the current team's organization? I'm mainly asking in response to that post (I think by Rosencrantz) about getting modellers and suchnot involved. I can't help but think that if we get those kinds of people involved, they'll get bored quick and leave because we aren't organized enough to keep them busy, regardless of how much content we have (or don't have) floating around in our heads. contingencyplan: very true i think that's already happened in a few cases| Yeah. Panda for one. The_Praetorian, thoughts? not sure what to suggest as far as team organization, but as far as ideas to keep artists busy, that's what the artwork forum is _supposed_ to be for... although it may also be nice to keep a wiki page for stuff like that the problem with the forums is that it's hard to tell whether or not a given request has been filled or not, and some posts may have several requests and ideas in them a wiki page may be much cleaner and easier to look through yeah. That's another thing we will want to do soon - refactor the forums. and easier to update when something is finished yeah well . . . the truth is, we aren't at the point where we need modellers and such and if an artist is not needed, they won't stick around Xentither will do stuff, but we've gotta have stuff for him to do and honestly, art is needed on two stages concept (preproduction) and models/skins (post-production) when you the game figured out and coded so it plays great but looks like shit, THEN call in the 3d guys the only reason I haven't gotten bored as an artist is because I always have stuff to do the comic, alluvion concepts, wallpapers, precursors concepts The_Praetorian: the thing is, if we had some more of the pre-production stuff to show the modellers, i think they could get started on the actual 3d stuff, regardless of what shape the engine is in the engine can pretty much be made to do whatever the artists need it to do (within reason) so i'd like to let the artists take some more initiative on the 3D end just so i have a goal to work towards with the coding ;-) in that case, the artists need more feedback regarding the concepts and a way to keep track so a wiki would be a good idea yeah it'd also be nice to get morgul to get his ass in gear and describe some of those nebulous ideas he has floating around in his empty head :-P no shit then we could try executing some of them Yeah. I think we'll attract people one of two ways - kickass content, or a working game. We're still a fair ways away from a working game, since I'm dragging my ass on networking (not really, but still) But if you look at Planeshift, they have a working game. They're popular as FUCK. Look at Infinity - until recently, didn't have a working demo. But they had content coming out the ass, from what I could tell. Again, popular as Fuck (not deserving of all-caps, but at definitely capitalization-level) heh that's a good point to put a point on it, I'm tired of 1) only having spambots register, and 2) getting on and seeing maybe, just MAYBE 1 new post. and i don't think we should really shoot for "a working game" as an early goal just because of how much work is involved (networking and all these other changes just take time, regardless of how little ass-dragging we do) and it'd have to be really sloppy to make it to that stage fast personally i'd rather have a well-written game that has content ready for when it gets finished agreed also, by working game, I mean something that people can get on and interact with each other in. Doesn't have to have much capability at all - again, look at Planeshift true But we have to have thing for people to play around in. A few planets, a ship or two, something. yeah and because we're still working on the low-level base of the game (networking) it's not exactly realistic for us to expect it to be finished in the next month Now, Recon's started work on procedurally generating planets. I say we back him up as much as we can, to the point that if we tell him that he'll become a full dev upon success. :-PO definitely Do we have write to that area of the website? i'd love to see him figure something like that out, because it would provide a great basis for our universe ? what area? Can we modify the svnaccess file to give him access to a part of the repository (e.g., the sandbox, like I was saying) s/website/server aah yes okay. Then unless someone forsees morgul having an objection, let's do that tonight and either PM, email, or public-post in the forums that he has that now. we can pretty much do whatever admin work we need to, with a few exceptions that rosencrantz would have to handle but in that case we can do it ourselves * cara (i=cara@adsl-70-240-177-4.dsl.hstntx.swbell.net) has joined #svnprecursors howdy cara hey contingencyplan contingencyplan: sounds good hi cara Then let's do that. I'd say make it public, to give the message that anybody who can make a significant contribution to the game is awarded (generally speaking) with a full dev position. hey again whitelynx heh I'm all for that I just need A) time to work on it
