Structure your essay in the following manner: 1. 1-2 paragraphs summarizing how your concept of culture has changed by taking this course. You may want to compare your current understanding of culture with your understanding at the beginning of the course. Drawing from your Initial Essay from the beginning of the semester might be a good starting point for your “before” concept of culture. 2. Create a conceptual "toolkit": a list of 12 important items from the course that you feel are the most crucial items for somebody to know to successfully navigate other cultures. There must be 2 “toolkit” items for each of these modules: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7, for a total of 12 items. Each item should be summarized in one sentence (use bold type for this sentence) and then explain in 1-2 paragraphs. Discuss the importance and limitations of this concept and illustrate it with concrete examples. Each item must be illustrated using examples from the course (including Multicultural Manners, AF and JMPJ readings), and if applicable, examples from your experiences or those of people you know, or that you've read about outside the class. Please cite where your examples are from in either the modules or the text books. For instance, if you are using an example from the “Key Traits” section of the “Cultures:Definitions and Features” folder of “Module 3” you would cite that source as (Module 3> Cultures: Definitions and Features>Key Traits). If you are citing an example, idea or passage from one of the books, for instance Anne Fadiman page 173, cite that source as (AF pp. 173). Add the citation at the end of the sentence from which you use the passage, idea or example. There is no one correct set of answers; we are looking to see through your choice of these items and examples how deep and how broad your grasp of course materials is. Keep in mind that this essay should be more than a check list of examples with citations from the course, try to smoothly relate concepts from the course so that your knowledge of the material and how it relates to navigating another culture is evident. 3. For one of these 12 “toolkit” items, create an exercise (such as a video clip script, a discussion board exercise, an interactive exercise, a really interesting story, a set of graphics or pictures, a fieldwork or real world assignment, a short writing exercise, etc.) that you feel will help students taking this course better understand and/or apply this item. Describe this exercise in 2-4 paragraphs and attach any pictures if necessary. Ideally the exercise will be fun, creative, and make students think and learn in relation to the chosen toolkit item. 4. Conclude with a 1-2 paragraph summary of the importance and limitations of understanding culture for helping people successfully navigate other cultures.
