worker is an ugly and complicated piece of code.
what i'm looking for is a way to make the worker a bit uglier
so i can just exec it directly and get rid of this "launcher"
script, which is just a silly little wrapper.

ie something like:
#!/bin/sh
echo launching worker...
#some magic command that redirects stderr and stdout to /var/log/worker.log for all the below
#and now the arbitrary long contents of the "worker" script
