The essay that I chose was “The greening of the desktop”.  The essay discusses many different factors that have attributed to our dieing climate and are related to the computers of today.  The author also tells us of how much money can be saved with just simple modifications to the manufacturing of computers.  They discuss new techniques that companies have been developing to minimize pollution and talk about companies that are now working less on making faster computers and more on trying to reduce noise and energy consumption while also increasing their efficiency.  They also talk of companies that are going so far as to provide services for the recycling of computers since computers are mostly made up of highly toxic materials.

The subject of the essay is the different ways that people are have been and can be helping out climate through our usage of computers alone.  The essays theme is that our society uses millions of computers but nobody really pays attention to the massive effect it has on our climate.  I believe that the essay has multiple purposes, mainly it is an attempt to lobby support but it also is to inform and communicate the authors experiences.  The essay consists of examples of the effect on the climate and also describes a cause and effect relashionship between the examples and what they can cause.  It is an informal persuasive essay and is directed to anyone who owns or maintains computers.
