Problem with colors and rxvt-unicode

I installed urxvt and my color prompt wasn't working. I figured out that this line:

safe_term=${TERM//[^[:alnum:]]/.}   # sanitize TERM

in /etc/bash/bashrc changes terminal name from "rxvt-unicode" to "rxvt.unicode" which is not valid in "dircolors --print-database" nor in terminfo(?).
