Having some issues getting mod_rewrite working
Slackware 11
apache 1.3

What I want to achieve

http://mase.katalyst/anything.html will load
http://mase.katalyst/index.html

What I am getting

http://mase.katalyst/anything.html returns a 404

My httpd.conf
LoadModule rewrite_module     libexec/apache/mod_rewrite.so

<VirtualHost mase.katalyst:80>
    DocumentRoot /home/am/public_html/mase
    ServerName mase.katalyst
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule ^[a-z].html$ /index.html
</VirtualHost>

I have also tried
RewriteRule ^[a-z].html /index.html
