What is a VPN? A virtual private network (VPN) is a private data network that makes use of the public telecommunication infrastructure(Internet), maintaining privacy through the use of a tunneling protocol and security procedures. The idea of the VPN is to give a company or a person the same capabilities at much lower cost by using the shared public infrastructure rather than a private one. In our case , we use a VPN to connect you to our servers in Europe and Asia. We provide access to our servers trough two types of software, OpenVPN(TM) and PPTP(Poptop server), both can be used from Windows, Linux and MacOSX and both are open source. What is OpenVPN(TM)? OpenVPN is a full-featured SSL VPN solution which can accommodate a wide range of configurations, it implements OSI layer 2 or 3 secure network extension using the industry standard SSL/TLS protocol an supports flexible client authentication methods. OpenVPN is not a web application proxy and does not operate through a web browser. READ MORE. What is PPTP? PPTP stands for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, it does the same job as OpenVPN only in a different way. It was originally developed by Microsoft and a few other companies, but we do not use Microsoft's server, we use Poptop which is a linux alternative that has the same characteristics and on top of that is open source. We only have PPTP access to our servers because it does not need any client instalation on Windows machines and it might be enough for some people. We do not recommend it because Microsoft itself doesn't recommend it due to the inherent risks, PPTP is known to be a faulty protocol. READ MORE
