The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office operates on an annual budget of more than $300 million and employs more than 3,400 people, including more than 1170 sworn law enforcement deputies and 970 detention deputies. 

Additionally, the Sheriff's Office is responsible for operating and staffing two jails and a work release center which maintain an average population of more than 4,600 prisoners on any given day.

As of Friday, the sheriff's initial 2008 request had been slashed more than $30 million to $376 million, or about 7.7 percent greater than the existing budget, he said.
