Install SATA drivers without floppy disk: For those interested in making a CD with the SATA drivers (no floppy disk required) Preparation 1. Take your Windows XP CD and copy all the contents to your hard drive (such as C:\WinXPCD) Modify 'txtsetup.sif' for text install 2. Navigate to the \i386\ folder (you just copied it) and open "TXTSETUP.SIF" 3. Find the [SourceDisksFiles] section, and paste the following line under it somewhere (I pasted the line directly under this heading) si3112r.sys = 1,,,,,,4_,4,1,,,1,4 4. Now find the [HardwareIdsDatabase] section, and paste this line under it somewhere: PCI\VEN_1095&DEV_3112&SUBSYS_61121095 = "Si3112r" 5. Find the [SCSI.Load] section and paste: si3112r = si3112r.sys,4 6. Lastly, find the [SCSI] section, and paste: si3112r = "Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Controller" Modify/create "Winnt.sif" for GUI install 7. Create a new textfile, and place the following 7 lines in it: [Unattended] OemPreinstall=Yes OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\SATA\SI3112r" [Data] UnattendedInstall=Yes MSDosInitiated=No AutoPartition=0 (Note: change AutoPartition value to 1 if you want setup to automatically select the installation partition) 8. Save this file as "WINNT.SIF" in the i386 directory Copy files for text mode 9. From the Asus Website, download the SiliconImage drivers. 10. Extract and copy the 'Si3112r.sys' file into the i386 folder Create directory and copy files for GUI mode 11. At the root of the CD files on your drive (such as C:\WinXPCD\), make the following folder structure: \$OEM$\$1\Drivers\SATA (so you now have C:\WinXPCD\$OEM$\$1\Drivers\SATA\si3112r) 12. Now, copy the following files into this 'si3112r' folder, if you find them. (See a few posts up for description of these files): si3112r.cat si3112r.inf (important!) si3112r.mpd si3112r.sys (important!) Siisupp.vxd Siwinacc.sys Txtsetup.oem Burn your new XP CD 13. For this last step, you must follow the instructions closely. Please use the instructions on TheElderGeek to burn the CD. When the instructions reference "Microsoft Corporation.img", download Microsoft Corporation.img FINISHED! That should be all you need to install XP without using a floppy drive. :) If you want to modify these instructions for a different motherboard: You can usually find the information you need from the 'Txtsetup.oem' or '*.inf' file in your SATA drivers for your motherboard. For example, for the Abit KV7, you download the VIA VIA_VT6420plusVT8237_SerialATA_V210a.exe from Abit's website and extract the drivers to a folder. (Hint: Depending on the program you have installed, you can sometimes right-click the .exe and tell it to 'extract to VIA_VT6420plusVT8237_SerialATA_V210a\' to save some time.) Now that your drivers are extracted, you want to hunt down the 'Txtsetup.oem' file and open it in Notepad. For the Abit KV7, the file can be found in the '\DriverDisk\SATA' folder. (Note: if you can't find this file for your system, you might be able to find the information in the *.inf file for drivers compatible with XP.) In the txtsetup.oem for the KV7, the following lines are useful: * In the [Files.scsi.VIARAID_VT3149_XP] section: driver = d1, viasraid.sys, viasraid * In the [HardwareIds.scsi.VIARAID_VT3149_XP] section: id = "PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3149","viasraid" * In the[scsi] section: VIARAID_VT3149_XP = "VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller(Windows XP)",VT8237 Use this information to modify my instructions. I've marked in RED the parts that have changed: --- 3. Find the [SourceDisksFiles] section, and paste the following line under it somewhere (I pasted the line directly under this heading) viaraid.sys = 1,,,,,,4_,4,1,,,1,4 4. Now find the [HardwareIdsDatabase] section, and paste this line under it somewhere: PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3149 = "viasraid" 5. Find the [SCSI.Load] section and paste: viasraid = viaraid.sys,4 6. Lastly, find the [SCSI] section, and paste: viasraid = "VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller(Windows XP)" --- Hopefully that works! - rp
