“When there is a will, there is a way.” I hold this statement true to everything that I am interested in doing. This life changing lesson did not come from some profound book instead it came from somewhere one would least expect, a hockey goal. One night my friends and I saw a hockey video of a goal made by a Michigan player who had masterful stick handling skills, and made a bet about who would be the first to be able to do this “Michigan” goal. At that time I had absolutely no stick handling skills because of how late I was introduced into hockey compared to all my other friends who started hockey when they were less than 10 years old. Knowing that I am lagged behind, I watched the video repeatedly, and for two weeks instead of playing computer games or hanging out with friends, I practiced the trick. After those two weeks when I finally mastered the “Michigan”, and showed it to my friends, they were dumbfounded at how I could have learned it so quickly. Looking back at this little event in my life, I can safely say that I know there is a way for me to succeed in Temple, because I have the will to succeed. No matter what obstacles might get in my way, I know that I have the will to do whatever is necessary to go through that obstacle. It was one evening while I was hanging out with some friends watching a movie. However the movie became boring, so we decided to go on YouTube and watch some interesting videos. One video that caught our attention was a hockey goal made by a Michigan player who had obviously masterful stick handling skills. While watching this “Michigan” goal over and over again, we decided that this goal would be almost impossible for any of us to perform. This statement however prompted us to make bets with each other saying how we would be the first one to be able to learn this trick. I was introduced to hockey in my sophomore year in high school only because I was able to skate well. So naturally while I can skate around fine, my stick handling skills were lacking. Knowing that I lagged behind all my friends who started playing hockey when they were 7 or 8 years old, I had no time to lose. For two weeks I watched the video repeatedly and I considered learning this trick second only to my school work. Everything else I enjoyed doing when I had free time was thrown aside so I could practice; hanging with friends to watch movies was postponed, as was playing computer games after homework, and I even stopped reading novels. I did all this not because I wanted to win a bet, but because I wanted to actually learn this shot. When I was finally able to master it, and showed it to my “experienced” friends they were dumbfounded because out of all of us, I was never expected to learn it much less be the first one to do so. It was from this little period in my life that I realized “when there is a will, there is a way.” I know for a fact that I have a way to succeed at Temple, because I have the will to.
