Mother Tongue RR #1 I read the mothers tongue, and like the other essay "The Achievment of Desire", found a clear moral, (Imighttakeoutthisbecauseitdoesn'tmakesence)so far(shrugs) I like the stories in this "Thomas Reader" because of that. The writing style is fluid, and easy to read. This essay discusses several topics, from discrimination of non-native english speakers, to how her mothers speech affected her own english, in school, on tests, teachers opinions, and Amy's against the grain Choice to become an English Major. Amy's Mother is Asian and speaks broken english verses american standard english. Amy gives more then two example of where her Mother made her speak on the phone pretending to be the mom. Amy's mothers english was broken. Making business calls, the mother was never taken seriously. When Amy made the phone calls, Amy being a young and underage, the result was much more effective. Her mother would sit beside her, telling her what to say in moms broken english, Amy translates into standard american, and things got done. Amy hints that, any listener with half a brain would be able to understand her, though Amy's writing is more tactful that this. Amy describes Asian Americans as being pushed by their teachers into math and science, as one possible reason why there are so many Asian's in those fields. She got B's in english in school, A's in Math and Science. Now via her rebelious nature, is writing in english with pay. (Imighttakeoutthis) I really liked the conclusion, and her thoughts in the summery do give ideas of vivid imagery of her thoughts. (becauseitdoesn'tmakesence) Its worth a read. fit to one page. (thats it, who cares, I'll rewrite what I need)
