Many times upgrading all alsa packages to a newer version fixes the alsa problem so upgrading all alsa packages to the newest version is fastest and easiest. To upgrade alsa packages using your linux distribution package manager consult your man pages, distro wiki or forum for howto upgrade alsa packages. Before you begin: Close all sound applications, mixers, mixer-applets. automake package must be installed before you install mercurial package. automake package may need upgrading if you can not 'make install' alsa-lib. automake must be upgraded if you get compile errors for alsa-lib or alsa-utils compile. Remove alsa packages before installing hg. install kernel source and kernel headers for your kernel version. `uname -r` for kernel version. for ubuntu: `apt-get install build-essential` installs kernel sources. for ubuntu: you may need to install libconfig. ubuntu build alsa sources: `sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` libncurses5-dev automake autoconf` Read about mercurial before you install the mercurial package. [10]mercurial home page [11]hg info at gentoo Note: Use the "hg clone" command to download alsa-drivers, alsa-kernel, alsa-lib, alsa-utils. `hg clone http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-driver alsa-driver` `hg clone http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-lib alsa-lib` `hg clone http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-utils alsa-utils` `hg clone http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel alsa-kernel` Note: alsa driver needs alsa kernel to compile. After you uses hg clone to download all the alsa source files needed you must compile the alsa source files using: `./hgcompile` and not ./configure and make. hgcompile alsa drivers first, then alsa lib and last alsa utils. Next, as root: `make install` on alsa drivers first, and then for alsa lib and alsa utils All sound apps should already be closed then restart alsa or reboot. gentoo: `/etc/init.d/alsasound restart` ubuntu restart alsa: reboot After alsa restart or rebooting your computer: `cat /process/asound/version` #if the version is not the new version installed then `cat /proc/asound/modules` #make a note of which snd- module you use then `modprobe -r $(lsmod |grep ^snd |awk '{print $1}')` # to remove all sound modules then `modprobe {which snd- module you use}; cat /process/asound/version` # to see if new version now. next, as root: `alsamixer -V all` unmute and set volumes on all needed controls in alsamixer. close alsamixer and as root: `alsactl store` #this command stores the current alsamixer settings as root: `speaker-test -c2 -Ddefault -t wav` # you should hear a voice in left/right front speakers visit freenode #alsa to keep us updated on progress and problems. references: [12]ubuntu alsa build version 1.0.13 [13]ubuntu hda intel sound howto [14]alsa ubuntu forum [15]toshiba satellite info at gentoo [16]File Name [17]Last modified [18]Size [19]Description ___________________________________________________________________________ [20]tsalsa 09-Aug-2007 18K trouble shooting alsa script [21]tsalsa.faq 11-Aug-2007 3.8K FAQ trouble shooting alsa scri pt [22]tsalsa.manually 09-Aug-2007 4.7K do it yourself troubleshooting alsa info file References 1. http://www.freenode.net/#alsa 2. http://www.freenode.net/#alsa 3. http://home.cfl.rr.com/infofiles/tsalsa 4. http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel 5. http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel/log/ 6. https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/ 7. http://alsa-project.org/ 8. http://www.aboutdebian.com/compile.htm 9. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=32282 10. http://selenic.com/mercurial 11. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/sound/alsa.xml 12. http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=305712 13. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto 14. http://ubuntuforums.org/tags/index.php/alsa/ 15. http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Toshiba_Satellite_P100#Audio 16. file://localhost/home/g/o/upgrading.alsa.html?N=D 17. file://localhost/home/g/o/upgrading.alsa.html?M=A 18. file://localhost/home/g/o/upgrading.alsa.html?S=A 19. file://localhost/home/g/o/upgrading.alsa.html?D=A 20. http://home.cfl.rr.com/infofiles/tsalsa 21. http://home.cfl.rr.com/infofiles/tsalsa.faq.html 22. http://home.cfl.rr.com/infofiles/tsalsa.manually
