A personal talent I am most proud of is excelling in the fields of English and History. And one of the main reasons why I am so interested in these subjects I believe is thanks to my family background and the environment I was raised in. I was born in Hamburg, Germany and I lived there for 7 years, my parents both came from Afghanistan and fled to Germany and later to the US to escape the Soviet oppression in Afghanistan. Being on the move constantly and a victim of international politics influenced my dreams and future aspirations. Because my parents were so involved in politics it was inevitable that I wouldn’t follow in their interests, listening to the conversations and debates they had and reading the newspapers they read I quickly developed a compulsion to read and be involved in as much of the global politics as I can. As I grew older I continued to stay involved in international news and my family, community, and school continued to shape my ambition. Being knowledgeable in the field of social sciences and English I always considered to be just a hobby, and never would have guessed one day I would be trying to major in it. Looking back into my past I would say that If I didn’t come from a foreign country, didn’t have parents involved in politics, didn’t have the intelligent teachers that I did have, I don’t think I would be where I am today. When I started growing more mature and the thought of college and careers started coming into view, I had no idea what I should major in. I remember countless times asking myself what my natural talent and what I was meant to do, and little did I know what I was meant to do was hiding right under my nose disguised as a “hobby”. What about Politics and English makes me proud, and how does it relate to the person I am? I am proud to be actively involved in politics because it allows me to understand the world I come from. I am proud to be going down this path because I know that I can make a difference in global relations and I can and will influence governments of the world. My family, community, and school shaped my dreams to become a political science major and that is a quality that makes me proud of the person I am.
