Date: Oct 31, 2007 10:17 AM Subject: A very Aesop Rock Halloween Body: This here's a mixed blessing. It combines two of the best things in the universe, Halloween and Aesop Rock, but notice where the videos hosted. MTVU. My experience has been that MTVU is less douchey than MTV or MTV2, but there exists still the threat that this video could make it to the waking hours playlist or any showing on the brother channels. It could go either way. Rabid MTV watchers might have an inspired revelation that putting the same lyrics to recycle beats does not constitute a new song, that you do not have to instantaneously grasp a creation in order for it to have value, that you can dare to not have the exact same music collection as every other person you know. That Stacy Ann Ferguson deserves execution for corruption of the youth. Try adding up the number of songs you know that rhyme "girl" with "world". And that the words preceding the rhyme are not filler to stretch the song out to a requisite 3-4 minute average. On the other hand, it could result that more will try to imitate the style with no understanding of it, thinking that instead of using simplistic language that appeals to the lowest common denominator, they can use esoteric and apparently incoherent language to play at psuedo-intellectualism, with the natural consequences of liberal arts majors congratulating themselves on their enhanced understanding, e.g. anyone who enjoyed 2001: A space Odyssey. This esoteric little niche of spoken word over beat will be diluted as Tommy Mottola discovers its economic utility. Or, maybe, maybe maybe, it'll divert its viewers daily lives in a minor, but worthwhile way. Maybe it marks a shift to more innocent days, where N.W.A.'s Express Yourself was played on MTV in the afternoon at my uncle's house in Auburn to my juvenile delight. All of the above is taking for granted the premise that Aesop Rock will continue to Aesop Rock regardless of his fame. You can be famous and fucking awesome at the same time e.g. OutKast, Aaron VanTuyl. Here's hoping. That's more than enough from me; I present you with Coffee:
