Bank of Estonia: Fear of kroon's devaluation is groundless TALLINN, Nov 12, - Estonia's national currency kroon is covered with forex reserves and fears of a change in the exchange rate of the currency are groundless, the central bank said today. There is no need whatsoever to change the present policy, the head of the Bank of Estonia's central bank policy department Ulo Kaasik said. "Furthermore, changing the exchange rate is practically impossible as it requires a separate decision by the parliament, and also it would be pointless from the economic policy point of view," he added. Although the kroon futures have risen slightly today, the kroon market is calm and there are no notable speculative money flows in it, Kaasik observed. In his words, considerably higher price levels have been recorded during the 15-year history of the kroon, which tend to occur in the slowdown phase of economic cycles. "In such cases it often seems that performers of transactions do not understand the currency board system insofar as the Bank of Estonia issues kroons only to the extent that it has foreign currency reserves, ensuring thereby the stability of the exhcange rate. It follows from this that conventional currency speculations against the central bank are an impossibility," Kaasik said. The Finnish business daily Kauppalehti said today the Estonian kroon is facing what is probably the worst crisis of its history. Trading in the currency indicates that investors are expecting devaluation of the kroon, the paper said. //----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eesti Pank: hirm kroonikursi muutuse ees on asjata TALLINN, 12. november, - Eesti Panga teatel on Eesti kroonid kaetud välisreservidega ja hirm kursi muutuse ees on asjata. Eesti Panga keskpangapoliitika osakonna juhataja Ülo Kaasiku sõnul puudub igasugune vajaduse senise poliitika muutmiseks.
