My family is from Taiwan. The small island is located off the coast of China. Each year, around Christmas time, my family and I go back to Taiwan to visit family and friends. Most of the time we are in Taiwan, we stay at my grandpa’s house which also serves as a health clinic on the first floor. When I was seven years old, I witnessed my first magic trick there. It was another hot and humid day in Taiwan. I was downstairs in my grandfather’s clinic waiting for everyone else to go swimming. My grandfather was the first one downstairs. Like any other grandpa, He loved everyone and was often smiling. However, unlike most, he was still working. At ninety years old, my grandfather still had a passion for his job. He was still diagnosing sick people and treating them. Being a Tuesday, my grandfather had patients coming in that day so, he wasn’t going with us. As soon as he came downstairs, someone came into the clinic. Watching the guy, I wondered if he was going to die. The pale man was sneezing and coughing. As he walked up to the counter, he swayed left to right and almost fell. My grandfather examined the patient; they spoke in Chinese as the man described his symptoms. After a minute, my grandfather led him to the back room. The family came downstairs. Before we left, I peaked into the back room and saw my grandfather sticking a gigantic needle into the patient. I was terrified and ran after my parents. A few days later, I was playing Chinese Chess with my grandfather, when the same person walked in. To my surprise, he was not only alive but, his skin was back to its normal color and his eyes were shining with energy. The patient personally thanked my grandfather and gave him a box of chocolates. The ability to cure patients and bring them back and make them healthy again was and still is a miracle to me. My grandfather doesn’t know how to make a coin disappear, I consider him one of the greatest magicians ever. That day changed my life. It opened my eyes to medicine and made me want to become a physician in the future; a physician that can perform this trick too.
