All the spectacular side of the war has gone, never to reappear. Trenches and alwaystrenches, and within range of the concealed guns invisibility is the supreme law. Day after day the butchery of the unknown by the unseen. War has become stupid. The strain on the infantry is tremendous, and it is endless. At the cost of thousands of lives a few hundred yars may be gained, but rarely indeed does even the most brilliant attack produce any thing. Fresh troops brought up by under cover of a tremendous artillery fire which opens by suprise may effect a breach. But only with a heavy loss can such an attack be carried through. [From an article in THE TIMES newspaper (november 1914)] how usefull is source A4 (the thing above) as evidence about the nature of warfare on the weston front ?
