I've decided to change my distro (got bored as usual) , but couldn't decide wich one should i install.Everybody kept sugesting that i should try Arch Linux.I didn't know anything about the distro so i started looking it up.It was everything i wanted. So what is Arch Linux? Arch Linux is a distro inspired by CRUX.It's meant to be simple and lightweight and it's target are powerusers which aren't afraid of the command line. It uses an rolling release system with new packages provided daily , this means it's easy to stay up-to-date.The package manager is called Pacman and it uses binay packages for i686 and x86-64 arhitectures.Arch packages are simple tarball archives with a text-based package database. It's repositories are split intro five main categories (similar to debian): * core, contains the base Linux system * extra, holds packages not required for the base system, mostly alternatives for packages in core * unstable, which has packages for programs in development * testing, a special repository, with packages that are candidates for the 'core', 'extra' or 'unstable' repositories. * community (AUR) , which contains packages maintaned by the community that have enough votes and were adopted by a so called Trusted User. Enought with that lets move on. The install: I downloaded the ftp-install image , it only has the installer with no packages and that means all the packages will be downloaded from a ftp server during install. After the cd finished booting we run /arch/setup to start the ncurse installer. After the informational message we are promted for the installation method , cd-rom/other or ftp/http. I chose ftp because i downloaded the ftp-install image , meaning that all my packages would be install via ftp.Next we are presented with the main menu listing all the steps needed to complete the install in order: 0.Configure Network (only available in ftp-install) Here you have the option of configuring your network via dhcp or entering the information manually. 1.Prepare Hard Drive You have an Auto-Prepare option which automatically partitions your hard-drive and creates partitions for root , boot and swap. You also have an manual partition option to manually partition the hard-disk with cfdisk. 2.Select Packages After selecting a mirror you can choose which packages will be installed.I only selected base for a lite install. 3.Install Packages It does what it says , it installs the packages you selected earlier. 4.Configure system Here you can edit your config files , usually the default work.Rc.conf is the main configuration file , you can configure your locale , network settings and define which daemons and modules should start on boot. You can also specify aditional mount points , define dns servers , allowed/denied network services , setup your root password and the root pacman mirror. 5.Install Bootloader Here you can choose which bootloader to install , GRUB or LILO. 6.Exit Install After everything is done you can exit the installation and type reboot at the command prompt to reboot your computer into your new OS.
