(Bones and Laurel are walking outside) Laurel: You’re anxious. Bones: We need to get Marin out of here. As soon as possible. Laurel: I agree…if there’s a Hand agent here, especially a shadow mage, he’s in very real danger. But where do we go? Bones: Not back to Artagel, since we know the Hand is active there too. (pause) Bones: We need to send him and that book to a place where he can make some progress towards getting these miscreants shut down. (pause) Bones: If one were to leave here and sail to the Northwest, they would come across Harrol before long. That may be our best choice. Galdar De-Naren is captain of the guard there. I trust you’ve read about him. Laurel: Read about him? I’ve met him. Bones: Ah, of course. Dasani. Laurel: Yes. She hosted several conferences for local leaders when I was younger. Galdar always impressed me. Even when discussions got heated, he was incredibly calm under pressure. Bones: Yes, but I’m sure you knew enough not to mistake that for weakness. He’s unwavering in his principles, and I’m sure he will provide cover for us. Laurel: No ships are leaving now. We’ll have to go first thing in the morning. Bones: Indeed. (pause) Bones: What’s on your mind? Laurel: After the story you told on the ship, I’m really tempted to dig through your head and find out what happens next…but I won’t. Bones: I’d appreciate that. (pause) Laurel: Do….do you get upset with me because of my powers? The way Cade does? Bones: Upset isn’t the right word. I won’t lie, however, it does unnerve me at times. (pause) Laurel: Ever since I left Boreal, I’ve been realizing how foolish I can be about some things. I find myself surprised to learn things that should have been obvious from the start. Bones: What do you mean? Laurel: I never met anybody who didn’t want me to read their mind. Everyone was always trying to develop my skills…so they encouraged me. (pause) Laurel: But it’s so stupid! Of course there are people who want their privacy. I’m just…annoyed at myself for having to find this out the hard way. Bones: I wouldn’t worry about it too much. It’s not all that different from anyone who has a powerful skill. You can do a lot of good with it, but it’s important to use your best judgment. (pause) Bones: Like you said, you’re not dumb. You will hone that judgment as time goes on. Laurel: Hopefully… (pause) Bones: Despite that….I wouldn’t mind an explanation of what’s going on in Finley’s head sometimes. Laurel: Hee hee! Is that really the most productive use of my skills? Bones: Ha Ha…if he mouths off to the wrong person, it may be the difference between life and death. Both: Ha Ha Ha Ha!
