I think the idea is a huge waste of time. Raising the legal age for purchasing tobacco products from 18 to 19 will bring into question all the rights of citizens who have just reached the specified adult age of 18, an age where these citizens have the rights to make their own choices, including the choice to smoke. How can I be told i'm an adult at 18 but not old enough to smoke? That at the age of 18 I can choose to join the army and die for my country, but when it comes to tobacco products your saying i'm too young. There are plenty of ways to help the problem of underage tobacco use, but challenging the rights an 18 year old adult has is not one of them. Not only that but minors were still obtaining tobacco products even when the legal age was 18, they always have, raising the age to 19 won't make any bit of difference, teenagers will still find ways to smoke just like they always have. The law already states that you must be 18, but just because the law says it, doesn't mean it's followed and it won't be any different upping the age to 19. If anything you will now have teens at the age of 18 who will be buying tobacco illegally. Enough time has been wasted debating this already, you can ask around a school and there will be many teens who can tell you stores that are willing to sell tobacco to minors and that is where this needs to start, More time is needed to be spent monitoring these stores, the money you are wanting to spend for this should be spent on prevention programs.
