As i'm sure many of you may or may not know, the Manchester NH School District has proposed a new budget for next year that would drastically alter the courses and extracurricular activities we can choose from. The list is sitting in front of me, and several things that the Mayor wants to cut to fit his budget are as follows: - Cut 120+ teachers, including several Assistant Principals (DEMPSEY and Dichard apparently were pink slipped today, for those of you who attend West...) (this will also result in roughly 30+ kids per class) - Get rid of the newer computers - Reduce maintenance on the school buildings - Decrease school transportation (AKA bussing) - Eliminate PE - Eliminate/severely decrease cirriculums in the arts and music programs - Eliminate extra cirricular activities (NAHS, Theatre, Key Club, NHS, etc... This ALSO includes several classes being cut, like AP classes or more "fun" non-required courses like electives because there are not enough teachers) - Eliminate ROTC - Eliminate several more administrative teachers if you want a full list, ask a teacher to let you look at it, i know plenty of them have the paper This is going to affect ALL kids in ALL grades, K-12 in every public school in the Manchester School district, no matter how big or small, no matter what grade you are in; so none of that "oh, i don't care about this because it wont affect me since i'm not involved in any of these" bullshit. Be there to show support for your fellow classmates, your school, the future kids who will be coming to the schools after you. If you want to help to stop this, please come to the public hearing that will be at Memorial High School in Manchester on Monday, April 28, 2008. It will be at 6pm, pending they don't change the time several times to confuse people and cause them to show up. If enough people do not show up to protest this and voice their opinion, it WILL be passed, and your Senior/Junior/Sophmore/Whatever year will SUCK. Even if you are a Senior, go and show support and think about the thousands of kids who will be coming to this school after you who would be robbed of opportunities you had. If we lose this, once its gone, it will not come back. Make posters, flyers, write a letter, make a petition, ANYTHING to raise awareness of this Bring friends, family, strangers and neighbors, make posters or shirts to bring to the hearing to protest this from happening. Please repost this and spread the word. This is ridiculous and we need as many people as possible to show up and stop this!! Another thing, how fair is it that police and the fire dept. get raises, while the teachers get decreases in their wages and we as the students suffer in our education so they can earn more money? That to me, makes no sense whatsoever. (says a teacher) And also, as was discussed at the NAHS meeting today, apparently if you are in any classes that get dropped, you most likely won't be able to pick your own courses to re-take since the only people who really knew how to re-work the schedule changes were pink-slipped Monday, April 28, 2008 @ Memorial High School, 6pm be there. no excuses. go raise hell. don't let them take this from us.
